St. Johnsbury Athenaeum - National Historic Landmark

Originally the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum was built as a public library and gifted to the townspeople in 1871.  Only two years later the Athenaeum's amazing art gallery was added.  The highlight of the art museum is the ten by fifteen foot painting by Albert Bierstadt "The Domes of Yosemite".  In 1965, Time Magazine referred to the Athenaeum as "the United States oldest unaltered art gallery still standing".  In 1996, the Athenaeum was added to the National Historic Landmark list.  Currently, there are only ten libraries in the country with this distinguished honor.  This amazing library and art gallery is located just minutes from the hotel.  Today this St. Johnsbury art gallery features more than one hundred pieces in its collection.  The library collection now exceeds 45,000 books.  Recently a handful of skilled craftsmen have restored the Athenaeum to its former glory.  A caring board of trustees continues to be responsible for maintaining the Athenaeum's historic qualities.
