On a clear day visitors can see as far north as Canada and east to the Atlantic Ocean. The Mt> Washington Cog Railway has operated since 1868.  More than five million visitors have reached the summit of Mount Washington aboard this one of a kind train experience.  Trains run rain or shine and visitors have the option of riding steam or bio-diesel trains.  The historic steam train leaves most days at 8:30am.  Dress appropriately...the temperature on the summit can vary significantly from the train's base station.  Most importantly, bring your camera as you will have the opportunity to take amazing pictures both from the train and from Mount Washington's breathtaking summit.

  • A jacket or sweatshirt is strongly advised at the temperature at the summit will be significantly colder and windy than the base.
  • Wear good shoes as you may be tempted to do a little climbing yourself.
  • Pack a lunch or snacks...the eatery at the summit is just "ok". 
  • Take full advantage of your hour on the summit of Mt. Washington...it goes by quickly.  
  • If you have a fear of heights...sit on the right side up and the left side coming down.
  • Schedule time before boarding to experience the museum at the base station.
  • Schedule time after your cog experience to explore the Mt. Washington Cog's gift shop.

Mt. Washington Cog was an amazing experience!

We were visiting in late April for a basketball tournament. Unfortunately, my daughter's team was out of competition earlier than anticipated. The hotel offers a great deal on experiencing the Mt. Washington Cog. We bought the package for our last night and brought my parents along for the experience. As a result we had two seniors, my wife and I in our forties, a 19, 15, and 7 year old. EVERYONE loved the experience. It was an incredibly clear day. The views on the ride up, from the summit and on the way down were amazing. We all agreed that it was one of the neatest experiences we've ever had together.
